Today I’d like to show you how I enjoy journaling.

When it comes to notebooks, I’d have to call myself a collector. I have a wide range of styles from Field Notes to large no brand notebooks. I’ve personally never tried Leuchtturm notebooks, Moleskins, or Midoris. I do own a Hobonichi Weeks, but that’s a planner. I did, however, recently purchase a Moleskin to try out, I’ll let you know how it compares to my current favorite, Paperage.

Anyway, when it comes to my gaming journal I like to take notes on things I’m collecting, games I’ve been playing, or even break down things I found interesting in games.

Here are some ideas if you are interested in starting your own gaming journal:

• Games you are currently playing

• Games you want to play

• Sketches of your character or inventory

• Quests completed or needing to complete

• Favorite locations or NPCs

• Notes on plants/ animals found in games

Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Tamagotchi Plaza. It’s full of different mini games that earn you Gotchi or money, which is used to upgrade the shops. My favorite mini games are The Night Pool, the Tailor Shop, and the Galette Shop. But today I want to put a focus on my top 4 most adorable Tamagotchi’s currently in my town.

How I Journal

Now that I know what I want to journal about I can get everything ready. For me, that starts with the game.

Im going to scroll through my Tamagotchi contacts and find my 4 cutest tamagotchis and write them down, then rank them 1-4.

Find something from a game you’ve been playing recently and make your own ranking list or try another gaming journal idea!

I want my entry to cover two pages, so it will be a drawing spread. I’m thinking the left side can have a title and my number one Tamagotchi and the right side can have the other three.

Once you have your idea, plan your layout. Use a spare sheet of paper and draw shapes to represent any drawings you want to make or arrange stickers with their backing still on to get an idea of where you want them. This helps gauge how much space you have left for any writing if you wish to add some.

With the layout complete, I can start my sketches. I’ll search for references and grab my art supplies.

Feeling overstimulated is very uncomfortable. It makes me feel jittery, confused, and angry. I just want to run away and hide. But I notice if I run to my room and sit, sometimes my mind replays the issue over and over, and it’s like i never left it at all.

This is where games come in.

Clear your space & Lower your lighting

Find a comfortable place where you can play a game alone. It can be at your desk or in bed with a handheld device.

Clear the area of any surrounding mess, this will help your mind by giving it a sense of openness. It’s like a breath of fresh air in an open meadow.

Lower your lighting by closing blinds, using one light, a night light, or warm color tones in your space. Don’t forget to lower the brightness of your screen to help your eyes in the darker environment.

By lowering the lights you create a calm atmosphere, making your space feel more soothing. It also helps lower stimulation by removing visual distractions.

Use headphones for comfort sounds or noise blocking

Noise cancelling headphones will be your best friend in these moments. Just make sure you let others know you won’t be able to hear them if they call for you. You deserve the time to get away even if it’s only for 5-10 minutes.

Grab your headphones, put on some nature sounds, white noise, or no noise at all and take a deep breath. This can help decrease feelings of stress and help improve focus.

Find your uncommon cozy game

Start up your go to comfort game. This is a game that lets your mind turn off in the most enjoyable way. It can be a game with repetitive motions. A game that doesn’t easily cause you stress or one that doesn’t necessarily have a story or one you care about. It could be as simple as a game whose menu music you enjoy. Staying in the menu with calming music coming through your headphones is a perfect way to decompress.

Find what works for you and breathe.

Take a deep breath every few moments and exhale the feelings.

I personally love melting away in Diablo 3 or fishing in Final Fantasy 14 or World of Warcraft. These games are easy and mindless for me, which helps me calm down when I’m feeling overstimulated.

So next time you're feeling overstimulated, try lowering your lights, throwing on some headphones and drifting off into your uncommon cozy game.

I have to redesign my entire setup.

Previous Setup

My original setup included:

• Dual Monitors with risers

• PlayStation 5

• XBOX S

• Controller stand

• Hue Lights

• Decor

The walls had dimensional art panels and an Ikea organizer for pens and small items.

My original aesthetic felt more in line with other cozy creators than what I felt in my heart. For instance, my use of a bright white desk setup with hints of pink, this was inspired by the many bright setups I saw and adored.

If you scroll to the bottom of my Instagram you’ll see what I’m talking about. You’ll also notice about half way up, I start introducing more color. I’ll admit a lot of the color shots are terrible, but this isn’t about photography.

The Idea

A much smaller desk means less room for what I once had, and more room for what I want.

I purchased a black desk this time, because at my core, I prefer darker aesthetics.

I love religious based art and the dark baroque periods. I love neon lights, robots, and cyberpunk vibes. I love apocalyptic wastelands and biophilic reverie.

I want to show me in the most authentic way possible.
It will definitely be a learning process.

I’ve mirrored others for so long that I’ve lost myself. That changes with this desk setup.

Im keeping the main components of the desk: dual monitors with risers, ps5, xbox s, small decor. I’m unsure if I want to dedicate myself to a color scheme, but right now I’m aiming for black & white with glitch highlights aka magenta and blue. I have my gorgeous Kwik Trip photo taken by thecolorfulkid, but I have a blank space directly behind my monitors.

The Wall

I had the idea of bringing back my dimensional art panels and to add a shelf with some decor and plants, but I didn’t like how it blocked the lights.

Scrap that idea.

So I brainstormed all night thinking up different layouts and couldn’t land on anything. I like the thought of pictures, but glass is too reflective. Shelves are a no go. The old texture panels bore me.
If I could just have something large that covers most of the space, that would be perfect.

The Canvas

I set my mind on a large canvas. The plan was to paint it all black with something in the center and then embroider moss onto it for the biophilic look. That seemed cool, but time consuming. So i drifted off to Pinterest.

I knew I wanted the canvas all black, but I didn’t want a blank black canvas. It needed… something.

This!

This is beautiful! There’s texture, it’s all black, and I can add a spot of color for a focal point.

So I went out and purchased a large canvas, some light weight wall spackling, and a plastic putty knife. I found the halfway point on the canvas and threw down a strip of painters tape. Added my spackle all over and let it dry.

Create your cozy setup

Write down somethings you like. It can be different vibes, movies, genres or themes. Pick your favorite things about each and then mix them together to find what’s authentically you. From there it’s time to piece together your setup.

Honestly it’s up to you. Just stay true to yourself and view other desk setups as helpful tips for layout. You’ll gain more by being unique.

Do you remember what sparked your interest in video games?

Was it a certain person, a specific console, or a game you tried for the first time?

The first gaming memory I can recall was playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles floppy disc on my dad’s old computer. I’m honestly amazed that was ever a thing, but watching tiny Leo as I guided him through the sewers was a fun time. I’ll never forget that game.

(Oh my gosh, watching that gameplay after not seeing the game in decades is amazing! Haven’t looked it up until this day.)

But I think what hooked me on gaming was when my uncles introduced me to the Super Nintendo and the PlayStation.

Zombies Ate My Neighbor

Every summer my older brother and I would fly to my grandparents house in Missouri to visit for a couple weeks. It was our favorite time of year because we were coming from a decent sized city in California, so visiting was like going to the jungle. Large trees and greenery everywhere you looked, fireflies at sunset, and fireworks we could light ourselves!

Our grandparents lived on the top of a hill and one of our aunts lived next door. We had an uncle who lived at the bottom of the hill and a cousin next door to him. The whole street felt like family.

But enough picture painting…

Some days my brother and I would walk to the bottom of the hill to hang out with our Uncle Lu. He had a Super Nintendo and he’d let us play Zombies Ate My Neighbor. I loved it, but my brother wasn’t a big fan of games so sometimes my Uncle would join the fight instead.

If you haven’t tried Zombies Ate My Neighbor, it’s a 2 player game where the goal is to save all of the humans and kill zombies with your water gun.

The creativity doesn’t stop there; you can use a weed eater to attack, soda cans as grenades, a fire extinguisher to freeze, and popsicles, dishes and silverware as throwing weapons. There’s a lot more than these, but it’s more fun to experience on your own.

The levels are designed beautifully and feel interactive with the use of trampolines that your character will happily jump on and pools they can swim through.

I don’t recall getting very far in the game and it didn’t have a save option. At the end of levels you were given a code, this code would be entered at the main menu to put you back at that last level.

I honestly miss requiring a notebook to write saves in, actually there’s a lot I miss about the early gaming scene.

Lara Croft

Another memory that stands out for creating my love for games is going to my Uncle Steve’s house to play PlayStation. He introduced me to Tomb Raider and Hot Shots Golf. I loved the graphics in Tomb Raider and Lara Croft was gorgeous to me! My favorite thing to do was walk around her house and practice hand stands in her training room.

Hot Shots Golf was a lot of fun to play versus, who knew golf could be entertaining? I loved the logic it required, having to gauge your shot based on the club type, weather, and wind was oddly satisfying.

Maybe it’s just my Spock brain.

Super Mario Kart

The games didn’t end there, my Grandma kept a Super Nintendo at her house for us as well. (We were the only grandkids at the time.) So since we stayed at her house, my brother and I would play Killer Instinct. There’s something about that game’s start up music and selection voice (below) that I love to this day. To be honest, a large amount of my Killer Instinct time was solo.

The game I played the most was Super Mario Kart. I raced as Koopa and my favorite track was Koopa Beach. The music in the game was on a whole ‘nother level! It was my all time love!

Oh wait, Mario Circuit! That’s my jam!

Or, or Donut Plains!

Honestly, it’s all amazing.

Do you remember how the trophies were announced in Super Mario Kart?

First off, another excellent song. Second, the animations were adorable and made you feel accomplished. Like Koopa hitting his bottles back and forth in celebration. Each character had its own cute animation, but if you got 4th, you just sat there sad.

Nintendo 64

For Christmas in ‘96 I asked for a Nintendo 64, it would be the first game console in our house. My brother had a Gameboy, but that’s single player. (Plus, he ended up breaking it with his head when he got upset at it.) He asked for a paintball gun that year.

Anyways, one night we were playing hide and seek in the house, I went to hide in my parents closet, I hid behind some clothes and discovered our gifts: the Nintendo 64 and Paintball Gun. I called my brother over, we were ecstatic, but quickly got out of there and never spoke of it again.

Now this didn’t stop our excitement Christmas morning, but to this day it still makes me laugh. I laugh more when my brother tries to say it’s his N64… Yea right, just like those Pokemon cards you stole from me..

Siblings!

The N64 was and still is my favorite console. (My original one is also still in working condition.) I spent a large amount of time playing Mario Kart 64, I played as Toad and wrecked everyone I versed.

I also had Yoshi’s Story, which honestly I could listen to those lil’ dinos sing all day. I beat the whole game and found every secret leading me to create my own walkthrough complete with hand colored drawings. (I wish I still had it to show you.)

Banjo Kazooie was also in the mix. This one I’d start up and just hang out or draw while listening to the menu music.

We didn’t have YouTube, so this was the only way we could enjoy video game music. Oh and yes, I beat Banjo Kazooie.

Video games have always been a piece of my life. They bring a sense of peace, a feeling of comfort, and they create lasting memories.

I think that’s why I’m so thankful for the gaming community and what it’s become today.

I’m not very talkative, it’s hard for me to put my words together when speaking in person. But if someone brings up games, I can chat as long as they’ll let me. So if you’re anything like me and you can read or listen to someone go on about games, feel free to join me on my journey.

As a cozy gamer, I find my peace in the games I play. They don’t necessarily need to be a calm game, since as you know, my definition of cozy is different from most. Knowing this, I wish to share some tips to keep my gaming space as peaceful as possible.

Prepare your space

Your peace begins with your surroundings; so before diving in, prepare your gaming area.

• Get yourself a drink or a snack, maybe both!

• Put some comfy clothes on.

• Find a snuggly blanket, a back pillow or a stuffy, whatever brings you joy.

• Set your lighting within your space.

Make your area feel safe and comforting to you. Don’t forget to use the restroom to cut down on having to tuck back into your comfy spot.

Mute. Block. Vanish.

If you’re playing an online multiplayer game head to your settings and mute other players. Trust me, it’s not that serious if you are playing solo online. Muting will save your sanity and your emotional wellbeing, especially if you’re a woman. (iykyk)

I also suggest making your console message notifications set to Friends Only. I’ve had past experiences of randos sending weird or mean messages just because it was set to Everyone.

Lock it down, save your peace!

Let yourself melt away into the game without a worry from other players. You won’t believe how much it makes a difference and how much better you will become at reading fellow players without having chat enabled.

Solo Queue

Alone time in games is powerful. This can be solo queuing in online multiplayer games or playing single player creations. Whatever you choose, it’s healthy to try every so often. Having this “me time” will not only provide a sense of relief, it will also improve your gameplay. Solo queuing allows you to learn a game on your own terms. It lets you go as slow as you need to experiment and discover your playstyle. It provides freedom from the stress of performing for others. This not only enhances your gameplay, but also brings a sense of peace to any game you choose to play.

Play what you want

In the end, the best way to protect your peace when gaming is to play what you want. Don’t fall victim to trends or content creators. Do your research, watch some gameplay and figure out if it's something you would enjoy before going all in. Trust me, you may remember I’ve made this mistake before. If there’s a demo, even better, give it a play and find out if it’s something you’d like. Nothing is more peaceful than finding a game you truly enjoy.

the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

After a long day at work, it’s nice to come home and relax with some gaming. But depending on the game, you could end up stressing yourself out more. This is why I always lean towards fishing mini games.

Fishing is my forever love

I've tried fishing in real life, but i'm not very good. No one has ever taught me and I don’t have the drive to teach myself, let alone wait for hours for one bite.

Now fishing in games, that’s where the fun is! I’m guaranteed a bite and whether I land the catch or not, it’s a great feeling getting the chance to reel it in.

But what makes fishing in games so relaxing?

It provides a break.

Fishing mini games have been added to a multitude of games; from Animal Crossing, to Final Fantasy 15, Hades, and even Fortnite. Access to these mini games give the user a much needed break from the grind. It allows them time to relax and wait while not worrying about the next kill or quest. It gives the player breathing room while remaining in their current world. Having this option is perfect for those of us that get overwhelmed easily. We can still pursue the main purpose of the game, but we might take a tad longer to reset with some fishing.

It adds collection / rewards

Many of us enjoy the feeling of winning and fishing mini games are like tiny wins with each fish caught. The tug of the line, the reeling and the exciting catch animation! Games make this feeling more effective when they track your catches through the use of a journal or otherwise. This becomes a side quest for completionists or others that enjoy collecting. It’s the perfect excuse to take a break, you no longer feel like you’re wasting time if you're working on completing a piece of the game.

This effect doubles when rewards are provided for specific amounts or catches. For instance, the game can reward you with a new title for catching 10 unique fish. Or maybe catching a specific fish will give you a chance at a new pet. These kinds of rewards make fishing feel comforting and fulfilling at the same time.

It aids in gameplay

Some fishing mini games allow you to eat the fish you caught. Upon eating certain fish you gain different stats. These stats then aid you in the game, so if you are ever having a hard time in a fight, take a fishing break. It could be the perfect chance to catch a fish with the stats you need to complete the task at hand. This not only makes your gameplay more smooth, but it also benefits your sanity. As you’re no longer flailing your arms in anger over having been killed again.

It’s peaceful

Overall, fishing mini games are amazingly peaceful. Sure you’ll get the occasional difficult one, like Monster Hunter Wilds. But compare their whopper fishing to killing a top ranked monster and fishing is once again a peaceful sport. Most of the time fishing mini games are as simple as hitting a couple buttons and reeling in the goods. But if you’re ever struggling, I’d be more than happy to provide some fishing tips for any game i’ve played. I will forever see fishing as a welcome experience for a sense of calm amongst the daily grind of quests and kills. It’s a place where players can kick up their feet for a moment and take a sigh of relief.

Remember this the next time you feel overwhelmed in a game, maybe you just need to fish.

King Krush is purely cosmetic and brings nothing but cute reactions to your greetings and gameplay. He sits with you on your gameboard and cheers you on or wallows in your loses.

Can you pet the Devilsaur?

Yes! King Krush can be pet and he even has a toy and treats to share. Preparing King Krush a snack will make him follow the treat with his eyes and growling until you finally give it to him. I started my cozy journey November 11, 2024. I had been seeing gorgeous desk setups and adorable games and wanted to join in the fun. I posted my first picture and discovered the most kind and welcoming community.

Cozy Interaction

After my first few posts on Instagram i noticed many sweet comments. People complimented my setup, asked questions, or just said ‘happy ___day’. Other creators shared my posts and one reached out to become partners.

I’m not sure about other communities, but in the cozy community you may see something called partner posts. These are like cozy friends that share each other's posts.

Anyone can reach out to another and ask to be partners. If both agree, then they can establish how often to tag or share each other's posts through stories. On tagging, cozy partners will usually mention each other somewhere in their description or tag them on an image.

Mentioning your cozy partners allows your audience the chance to find more cozy content and gives your partner a higher chance of being seen. It’s a kind way that this community supports each other.

Sharing is Caring

The longer I posted on Instagram, the more I learned. I needed to post carousels and reels, comment often and post stories daily. Stories can be your personal images, your posts or other creators' posts. When you share a cozy creator's post to your story you’ll notice a good 3 out of 5 will respond with a ‘thank you’ or reaction.

It doesn’t matter if they have 100 or 10,000 followers, there’s a high chance they will respond.

I’m not sharing this because I feel like it’s something they should do. I'm sharing because I know they don’t have to and yet some do and I find that to be so sweet and thoughtful.

Even though the cozy community is the sweetest, I’ve noticed a few people on YouTube stating some cozy youtubers are talking up games that they don’t even feel strongly about. I won’t share any links because I don’t want to cause drama, but I also don’t want people thinking badly about this community.

I know some cozy Instagram creators who’ve started YouTube channels and they are true to their word. They’re down to earth and humble creators that share what they love. So please don’t let any videos deter you from checking out cozy youtubers.

I’m personally still trying to find my voice on YouTube.

If I could give an award to one cozy creator that stands out to me, it would be cozywithblake.

When I first started my Instagram journey I reached out to him asking what ‘partner posts’ were and he was kind enough to respond and explained it like a friend would. He comments and likes posts often, and has even started creating Cozy Page Reviews. These page reviews highlight a single cozy creator describing their aesthetic and overall vibe. It’s not only a great way to find new creators to follow, but it’s also an amazing way for him to show his love for the community.

The Wild Stuff

Lagiacrus and Seregious will be heading over to the wilds to disturb your peaceful endemic research. So if you feel like getting into some trouble, hit up your favorite handler to hunt them down and turn ‘em into some sweet new gear.

Speaking of handlers, after killing Lagiacrus you’ll have the option to select who follows you around, Alma or Erik. Personally I will be switching to Erik, I think a biologist such as himself would be more fun to hear snippets from. Maybe he can help me figure out this Insect Glaive?

Just kidding, I play horn. Fun fact about the horn, your seikret will no longer need to stop when you perform mounted! Also, layered weapons are going to be a thing. This means you can take your final ranked weapon builds and use them as a glamour to keep yourself looking runway.

While you’re at it, might as well become your own paparazzi because the photo mode is getting new options. They’re adding filters, brightness, and the option to hide characters. So if your teammates are in dusty gear and you’re flexing the paid cosmetics, just clear them from your photo and you’re good.1

The Exciting Stuff

These new limited bounty types have been added along with new ranking categories. I’m excited to have more reasons to wander the biomes catching random creatures and fishing.
The game is absolutely beautiful and I love hearing the sounds creatures make in your controller when you catch them. If you haven’t tried this yet, grab your capture net and give it a shot.

According to the MHW Showcase playing the content update will get you new rewards. Some of them appear to be Fishing Lure Pendants!

These pendants are adorable, so I will be heading straight for the fishing bounties in the hopes of obtaining one!

If you’ve ever scrolled through the Cozy side of Instagram, you may have noticed a specific style of video games being shared. Lots of farming sims, or quiet and slow games like Tiny Glade or Dorfromantik. This is what most people consider Cozy Gaming.

Yes, these are very cozy by definition, but…
I believe the true definition of a Cozy Game is any game that allows you to relax and unwind.

This opens up a wide range of genres that will be different for each person.

What makes you feel relaxed?

Can you recall a game that you enjoyed playing where you sat back and just vibed? One where you felt like you had your rotation down and everything was going smoothly? Assuming those feelings didn’t change after 10 minutes, then I’d say you found a cozy game.

For me, I realized my most uncommon cozy game is Diablo 3. (I kind of quit Diablo 4 for now) I notice when I play D3 on a built character, I can relax and massacre the whole screen while partially falling asleep on the couch.

It’s so nice.

But if you mention D3 as a cozy game, most will instantly disagree.

This is what I think needs to change about the Cozy Community. There needs to be more people opening up about the uncommon cozy games they enjoy.

Right now the Cozy Community is flooded with cute games, farming sims, and quiet puzzle games. We all know ‘em because everyone is sharing the same ones.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the Cozy Community! These are the most kind and welcoming people you will ever meet, but that's for another time.

I want to shed light on the fact that people are just sharing what they believe needs to be shared in order to gain views, instead of what they want to share. I’d love to see this community start sharing what they truly enjoy or at least give their honest feedback on the games they play.

And while we’re being honest…

When i first started my cozy Instagram i fell victim to the classic cozy genre. I noticed everyone was excited for My Sims Cozy Bundle so of course I joined in on the hype. My hubby ended up buying me this game that i had suddenly become interested in and after about a few hours of gameplay I realized it was not for me.

I had fallen into the cozy game trap.

I didn’t understand how people enjoyed the game. I’m not saying they were lying, but there's no way everyone loved it. I know now that it's not for me and this may be hard for some but…

I’m not big on Stardew Valley either.

Don’t attack me just yet! I haven’t played enough Stardew to know if it’s actually terrible or if I’m just being sour about losing energy so quickly. I really don’t enjoy having to eat apples every 5 seconds just to chop down some trees. So let me try again sometime when i feel the need.

What I’m trying to say is, cozy is subjective, it’s in the heart.

It’s up to you to find your kind of cozy.

For me, it’s hack & slash, fishing and some farming sims. I absolutely love games with a fishing mini game and bonus points if it has crafting, gathering, and cooking! Games like FFXIV, WoW, and Genshin Impact are so much fun because they include these things.

Fishing is my cozy love.

Let me rampage through a hoard with weapons or magic and gimme a fishing break, I’ll be in heaven!
This is my kind of cozy.
